The Battle of the Bay is a unique Stand Up Paddleboarding event set in the Bristol Channel’s beautiful Minehead Bay.
A series of fun and challenging heats using our new season fleet of SUPs and kit brings competition and participation together. Race with your mates or enter solo and meet new people. Bring the family along and paddle together. Or just watch and play on the beach. Can you take on ‘The Blast’, ‘The Burn’ and ‘The Battle’.
Like all our events the focus is on getting involved and having fun in our amazing natural environment. The buzz on the beach is fantastic and the party goes on past sundown…

Everything you need to know…
The Battle of the Bay will held on Saturday 19th August 2017. You can choose to enter as many of the races as you wish. This can be decided on the day depending on how you’re feeling.
The event is based on Minehead Beach across the road from our centre on Warren Road, Minehead, TA24 5BG
- Registration opens: 14:30
- Event Starts: 15:30
- Race briefing on the start line: 10 mins prior to each race.
Please use one of the many public car parks in Minehead or along the seafront. Use the poscode above for your satnav. As you come into Minehead follow signs for the sea front, this should take you down Seaward Way. Follow this all the way to the roundabout on the sea front. Turn left to head directly to our centre and on-raod parking. Turn right (the second exit) to head to off-road parking opposite Butlins. Butlins main gates will be on your right and the car park entrance rises up onto level with the esplande on your left. From here walk back along the esplanade to the event.
Please bring a completed personal details form for each person in your group. This can be downloaded from the link at the bottom of this page.
At the point of registration you’ll also need to enter each of the individual races.
‘The Blast’ – This sprint event has a ‘Le Mans’ style start on the beach. Run to the sea, get on your board and sprint through the course before running back up the beach with your board and through the finish line.
‘The Burn’ – This distance event will see you start and finish in the same way as the sprint but your stamina will be tested over the longer course. Depending on the prevailing conditions this may be in the form of laps or a traverse of the bay.
‘The Battle’ – The ultimate team time trial. Grab your mates, paddle with the family or be allocated into a team of 8 to take on the sprint course aboard our Mega SUP! Your whole team of 8 need will be on the board together, your time will be taken and the prize goes to the fastest team.
There’s no need to bring your own board. All the races use our new season fleet of SUPs – this gives a level playing field and keeps participation and fun competition at the forefront.
DRINKS & TOILETS
Please bring lots of fluids.
Before, during and after the event refreshments will be available from ‘Dana’s’, our favourite beachfront takeaway right next to our centre. This is not included in your entry fee.
Public toilets are located at various places along the sea front.

WHEN YOU FINISH
Please make sure you visit the registration desk at the end of each race.
Following the last race the prize giving ceremony will commence on the beach.
LASTLY, PLEASE REMEMBER…
This is a competitive paddleboarding event. It’s a race if you choose to compete however it is not a necessity – taking part and having fun is most important. Care for others and the beach environment must be at the top of your priority list. Your finish time will be recorded and prize giving will follow the last race. Your times will be posted on the website shortly after the event for your information.
Entry requirements and information

NB THE PERSONAL DETAILS FORM MUST BE COMPLETED BY EVERY PARTICIPANT AND HANDED IN DURING REGISTRATION ON THE DAY.
CONDITIONS OF ENTRY
- These are races but participation is top of our priority. Support and encourage others.
- All entrants under 18 years of age must be supervised by an adult (over 18 years of age) in a ratio of at least 1 to 3. This can be from the beach.
- All entrants must wear a buoyancy aid. Also a wetsuit if conditions require – this is decided by the event organisers.
- All entrants use the equipment supplied by Channel Events – Boards, Paddles and Buoyancy Aids.
- All entrants MUST be able to swim 25 metres.
Any entrant failing to compete within the rules statyed in the pre-race briefing will be disqualified.
Please check the website, Facebook or Twitter for any last minute changes to the event, particularly in the run-up to the event taking place.
All entrants should be aware that this is a series of water based challeges and requires sustained physical exertion.
Whilst the organisers will do everything possible to safeguard entrants, no responsibility can be accepted. Those who require insurance cover against possible injury and/or loss of, or damage to, property should make their own arrangements.
Please note that the organisers reserve the right to re-organise the event in any way considered appropriate to prevailing conditions. If the event has to be cancelled through no fault of the event organisers, no refund will be made.
Participating in paddleboarding will always have associated risks of personal injury. We make every effort to minimise this risk. However, there are inherent risks of bumps, bruising, sprains, scrapes, cuts. More serious injury cannot be ruled out and participants taking part in this event should be aware of the risks and be responsible for their own actions and their ability to complete their chosen activity.
Should you need to cancel your booking once it has been confirmed, the person making the booking must notify us in writing or email. The date on which we receive written notification will determine the level of cancellation charges applicable.
Cancellation up to 2 months before to the event – full refund. Cancellation less than 2 months before – no refund. Entries may be transferred to another suitable entrant up to 1 month before the event – contact us via email.
No discount or reduction in fees will be made if the weather or other conditions outside the control of Channel Events preclude all or part of the event taking place.
If Channel Events fails to attend or cancel under no circumstances will consequential losses be met. Concerned entrants are advised to take out insurance to cover this eventuality.
Please remember to print off, complete and bring to the event the Personal Details Form. Under 18’s need to have the form signed by a parent or legal guardian and must be supervised throughout the event.

Man vs Moor is 10 kilometres of wild trail running set in the stunning and remote western end of Exmoor National Park.
You’ll find yourself scrambling up and down steep combes, crossing boggy valley heads, swimming across Pinkery Pond and going underground in this truly awesome event.
Getting to the finish is tough and you’ll leave with a massive sense of achievement. You’ve taken on the moor!
The Exmoor Perambulation, is a traditional circular long distance walking event dating back over 725 years.
This is one of the most challenging walks in the Exmoor annual calendar. During the 31 miles of cross country walking you will be taking in breathtaking views and accessing parts of the National Park not normally open to the public. You will also be participating in Exmoor’s rich history!
The Exmoor Explorer is a non-competitive mountain biking event of 20 or 40 miles, held in the beautiful Exmoor National Park in the South West England.
Open moorland, woodland trails, natural single track and secluded Combes, the Explorer doesn’t disappoint.
This iconic Exmoor cycling event was started 18 years ago by Team Zoyland and we at Channel Events are immensely proud to take it on for 2017 and beyond.
Can I bring my own board?
No. To maximise participation and fun we supply all the equipment required to enter each of the races.
Can I wear my shorts?
Of course. If the weather is appropriate then shorts are fine. Should the weather be inclement and/or cold we will supply wetsuits or you can bring your own if you have one.
What if I cant find a team for ‘The Battle’?
Don’t worry. We will allocate entrants into teams of 8. This gives you an opportunity to meet new people and share your experience. However, if you and 7 of your mates have all entered then let us know at the point of registration and we’ll put you down as a complete team.
What if I run out of time?
You won’t. It can take as long as you need. You will always be in view of safety kayakers and event organisers on the beach.
Can I retire from a race if I’m too tired?
Yes. You must inform the nearest safety kayaker who can communicate your intentions to the race officials. You’ll then be asked to paddle back to the beach taking the shortest distance. Please do not impede the other entrants should you need to cross the course to get back to the beach.
Is it possible to get lost?
No. Each race will be well way-marked with large inflatable buoys as well as a pace setter paddling a kayak in front of the field.
Will there be different race categories?
Yes. ‘The Blast’ and ‘The Burn’ will have Mens, Womens and Junior catergories. ‘The Battle’ will be mixed gender and age.
