Clevedon Triathlon

Sunday 18th July 2027 (TBC) – 08:30 Start

Entry from: £49 + booking fee

Channel Events are super excited to be back in Clevedon to bring you the 3rd edition of the Racecheck Bronze awarded Clevedon Sprint Triathlon!

In 2024 we were handed the baton for the Clevedon SwimRun which was a huge success and won a Racecheck SILVER award in 2024 and a GOLD award in 2025 so we’re back for 2026 with the SwimRun on the Saturday (after Parkrun) and then the triathlon on the Sunday!  We’re striving to cement this as an amazing celebration weekend of swim, bike, run from 2025 and beyond.

It will utilise the magnificent Marine Lake where a 750m open water swim will start off the event in the safety of the lake with a backdrop of the glorious Victorian Clevedon Pier. The bike route is undulating with a loop towards the village of Portishead and back on some stunning roads with sea views across the channel to Wales. Finally, you’ll take on the 5km run route, a 2 lap mix of flat paved seafront promenade and scenic undulating trails around Poets Walk and Wains Hill and then you’ll return to the Salthouse Fields to finish with your arms aloft, smiling for the camera!

As with our Minehead Triathlon, we are giving people the option to complete the Clevedon Triathlon without receiving a medal at the end of the event. You may however, purchase them at the additional price of £7.00 per person.  As behind the scenes costs increase, this not only helps us to keep the entry price down but also allows us to be more environmentally sound for those who loved doing the event, but didn’t want a physical memento at the end.  The last date you will be able to purchase a medal will be one month prior to the event.

Please note: if you are entering as a relay team, medals will need to be purchased for each team member.

What’s included in your entry?

Accurate Timing

Timing Chips will be used to give accurate timing throughout the course.

Your total time and split times for each discipline will be available online for you shortly after the event ends.

Please place your timing chip in the buckets provided after you cross the finish line.

Secure Transition

The transition area will be carefully marshalled and only entrants and Channel Events staff will be able to enter this area.

Athletes will need to show their race number to access transition and to collect their bike/kit after the race.

Wave Starts

Wave 1 will go off at 08:30 with subsequent waves going off at 2 minute intervals.

Waves will be based on athlete swim times with the fastest swimmers going off first.

Waves will contain 25 participants to minimise congestion due to the nature of the swim course in Clevedon Marine Lake.

The number of waves will be dependent on the number of entries.

Team Entries

Team entries are available for this event and the entry fee covers all team members (for non British Triathlon members race passes are purchased at point of booking).

Team entry will require a timing chip swap during transition.

Please note, medals will need to be purchased separately at the point of booking for each team member should they be required.

Marshal Points

Marshals will be positioned along the route where the event organiser deems it is appropriate. UK road traffic laws must be obeyed and marshals will be checking this. Marshals will also closely observe the bike course junctions for unsafe turnings and will report back to the technical official.

Event Safety

Safety across the event will come in the form of kayakers for the swim section and appropriately positioned marshalls for the bike and run courses. All entrants will be given details in the pre-race information pack of what to do in case of an incident.

Water Station

There will be a water station 50m after transition out  which can be accessed from both the bike and run courses. There will also be a water station at the finish line.

Please note, we are now a cupless event organiser so you’ll need to carry a collapsible running cup on the run if you require hydration from the water station.

An Amazing Course

With the backdrop of the beautiful Victorian Town that is  Clevedon, we bring you:

750 metre open water marine lake swim using Clevedon Marine Lake.

20 kilometre fast undulating and scenic bike course along the coast towards Portishead and back.

5 kilometre coastal run on mixed terrain around Church Hill and Wains Hill.

Fully Waymarked Course

Each section of the course will be appropriately way-marked and full details will be given in the pre-race information and pre-race briefing.

RED Buoys mark the swim course, black arrows on yellow background mark the bike course and orange arrows on a white background mark the run course.

Water Safety Crew

For the swim section of the route there will be water safety craft and crews on site. The swim section uses the Marine Lake where the shallows and the side wall can easily be reached throughout. Marshals can help you exit the water at the slipway should you wish.

Prize Giving

Will take place at the event HQ, 15 minutes after the last athlete finishes.

Prizes will be given for:

BRITISH TRIATHLON FEDERATION (BTF) RACE PASS

This year, things are structured a little differently in line with new British Triathlon Federation policies.

Day Membership has changed its name to Race Pass. Any participant who enters a British Triathlon permitted event that takes place from 1 January 2024 needs to:

1. be a British Triathlon annual Core or Ultimate member, which includes public liability and personal accident insurance for training and racing at a British Triathlon permitted event, or,

2. purchase a Race Pass providing a race licence and public liability insurance cover for the duration of a specific event

As part of your booking process, you will be offered the opportunity to enter your BTF membership number or, if you are a non member, purchase a Race Pass.  BTF will be checking this information just prior to the event to make sure each participant can take part in the Clevedon Triathlon which is a British Triathlon permitted event.

We will be asking everyone else to provide proof of valid BTF membership as you register on the day.

BRITISH TRIATHLON FEDERATION (BTF) CATEGORIES

Also in line with new BTF Transgender policy introduced on 1st January 2023, we now have the following categories for entrants:

  • Female category
  • Open category

Only people who are registered at birth as female are eligible to compete in the Female category. All individuals including transgender people are eligible to compete in the Open category.

You may however, purchase them at the additional price of £6.00 per person.  As behind the scenes costs increase, this not only helps us to keep the entry price down but also allows us to be more environmentally sound for those who loved doing the event, but didn’t want a physical momento at the end.  The last date you will be able to purchase a medal will be 16 days prior to the event – Friday 20th September 2024 at midnight.

Please note: if you are entering as a relay team, medals will need to be purchased for each team member.

While out on the run section the majority of the route is traffic free, there are two short sections on both laps that are on a quiet roads. Following the swim and run sections you will pass through transition in the same direction keeping the process smooth and flowing.

FAQs

I’m not sure, is this event for me?

If you can confidently swim 100m, ride 25km and  run 5-7km, that’s great. We would love for our triathlon to be the event you work up too. We suggest that you get plenty of training in beforehand concentrating on covering the distances and would also suggest that you up your distances along with riding after a swim and running after a ride to get used to transitioning and using different muscle groups. Get involved with some Go Tri events and pool based novice and sprint triathlons over the summer. This will stand you in good stead for the Clevedon Triathlon.

Is it possible to get lost?

The route will be fully way-marked with appropriate signage including distance markers. As long as you keep focused you’ll be fine. Marshals will be present at appropriate locations and sweepers will pick up behind the last entrants.

Do I have to wear a wetsuit?

If the water temperature is between 11 and 14 degrees a wetsuit will be compulsory, over 14 degrees you can opt to just wear your trisuit. In July the lake is often 20 degrees plus. Should the water temperature exceed 22 degrees then a wetsuit is not allowed.

I’ve never swum in open water before, can I still enter?

The swim section of the course is in the marine lake so it would help to have experience in open water but this is not essential as the swim route is never more than 50m from the lakeside. If you cannot confidently swim at least 750m, then this event isn’t for you.

What if I want to enter with my mates?

Generally triathlons are about healthy competition so you may want to enter to race your mates. If you want to enter and take on the route with your mates to gain a sense of achievement then that’s awesome too. Our events are just as much about inclusion, accessibility and participation as they are about competing.

I can do one/two elements but not them all! Can I enter with other people?

YES! Enter as a relay team of 2 or 3 people and split each of the elements between you!

Please note: you will need to purchase medals for each member of your team separately.
