Like many other events organisations we simply couldn’t put on our awesome events without the help of committed volunteers. Our volunteer event staff have affectionately become known as the ‘TRIBE’. Each of our tribe members have been asked a series of questions and you’ll see the format when you read on. We hope you enjoy meeting the team and finding out why they get involved.

Please be upstanding for Jenny Palmer. As a keen runner, not only does Jenny enter our events, but she also volunteers at them. Sometimes she does both! Come rain or shine, day or night, you’ll find Jennys big smile and infectious laughter encouraging our entrants around the course whether she’s running them himself or marshalling! She’s totally awesome!

Name: Jenny Palmer

Age: old enough that I now forget 🙂

How and why did you become a Channel Events Volunteer ‘TRIBE’ member?

Before joining the Tribe, I took part in quite a few Channel Events and loved every minute of it! The buzz, the support, and the sense of community were amazing, and it inspired me to get more involved. Becoming a Tribe member means I can now help create that same experience for others while being part of a brilliant team.

Favourite Channel Event to work on and why?

My favourite event to work on is One Fyne Night because the atmosphere is incredible! Everyone’s in great spirits, the energy is amazing, and it’s so rewarding to be part of such a fun, uplifting summer evening

Longest marshalling/volunteering shift?

My longest marshalling shift was at the Minehead Triathlon, where we were up in the woods halfway to the top of a steep hill. It definitely gave the legs a workout just getting there! (Run section) But it turned out to be such a fun spot—cheering athletes on as they tackled one of the toughest parts of the course, having a laugh with the team, and soaking up the atmosphere made the long day fly by.

What is the best thing about marshalling/volunteering at a Channel Event?

The best thing about marshalling/volunteering at a channel event is being right at the heart of the action—helping the day run smoothly while soaking up the incredible atmosphere. You get a front-row view of the excitement, meet new people who share the same passion, and play a vital role in keeping participants safe and supported. It’s a chance to give back, be part of a great team, and enjoy the buzz of a memorable community event.

Preferred form of encouragement for entrants, clap, cheer, shout etc?

I love cheering people on with plenty of smiles and positive energy and lots of laughter—it’s amazing how a few kind words or claps can give someone a real boost during the event. If I run as well as helping then I also love to sing! I’m literally like a human jukebox taking requests as I go!

What is your essential piece of marshalling kit other than your Channel ‘TRIBE” member t-shirt?

My Skorts of course! I love the collaboration between Channel Events and Flanci activewear I’d never heard of Flanci till another Tribe member introduced me to them since then I have mostly skorts but shorts, arm sleeves and neck buffs all with the Tribe/Warrior tiki on.

Brew of choice?

Builders brew for me! Can’t beat a good old cup of tea.

Bacon roll or slice of cake?

Love both but has to be cake right? I run for cake! 😛
